5 Reasons Why Your Skin Wants You To Stay Away From Alcohol And Cigarettes

Picture this scenario: It’s 4:00pm on a Friday afternoon. You had a long, stressful week at work. Meetings with clients, conference calls, several different projects to complete, paperwork, etc…But, it’s all good because the week-end is finally here and you are looking forward to a night out with some of your closest girlfriends…It’s now 11:30pm and you have just stepped into the classiest lounge in town. You and your girlfriends are looking fabulous, the music is great and the ambiance is perfect. This is exactly what you needed to help you relax a little and forget about your week. Except for one thing missing……THE DRINKS!!!! So, you and your girlfriends head to the bar, and then…Sorry to be the party pooper, but here are few things you should know before ordering your cocktail and pull out a cigarette while you are at it!1)      Alcohol promotes dull skinAlcohol damages your liver, when too much has been consumed. In case you don’t know, your liver is the organ that helps the body to get rid of all toxins (including alcohol). When damaged, toxins are not properly removed and unfortunately remain in the body.
Eventually, this can have a detrimental effect on your skin, causing it to look unhealthy, blotchy and dull.2)      Alcohol promotes wrinkles, so does cigarettesAlcohol is a very powerful dehydrating substance. Every time you drink, your entire body, including your skin, gets dehydrated. With this in mind, did you know that those who have a tendency to drink more may look older? Why? Simply because when the skin is dehydrated and therefore dry, collagen, which is the protein that is the support structure of the skin, is not regenerated properly. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles may be accentuated more rapidly. On the other hand, when you smoke, every cell in your body, including your skin cells, is affected by the toxins of the cigarette. For this reason, your cells die more rapidly, thus accelerating the aging process. Also, have you ever noticed how those who smoke pucker their lips around the cigarettes to take puffs? Well, this repeated contraction of the muscles around the mouth eventually causes the smoker to develop wrinkles in that area. In addition, to avoid the smoke released by cigarettes, the eyes have a tendency to close a little when smoking. Again, this repeated movement over time may cause wrinkles to appear around the eye area. So…wrinkles around the lips and eyes??? I’m sure that’s not the look you were going for! (At least I hope not, lol!)3)      Alcohol promotes puffiness According to dermatologists, your face may also look bloated and puffy as a result of alcohol. It causes the blood vessels to dilate. As a result, fluid is redistributed and it leads to swelling. It is more easily noticeable around the eye area, notably underneath your eyes as well as your eyelids, two areas where the skin is much thinner. If you are a drinker, you have probably experienced the puffiness look before, especially the morning after. Not cute!4)      Alcohol promotes skin redness As previously mentioned, alcohol dilates the skin’s blood vessels, some of which are located near the surface of the skin. In the event that your skin is already in poor condition, these blood vessels will have a tendency to be more visible. Consequently, this will cause your skin to have a reddish tone overtime. The scary thing is, this redness on your face may be permanent if the blood vessels continue to be enlarged…. Ouch!5)      Alcohol promotes acneSome studies show that alcohol may also have an effect on hormones. It can cause a hormonal imbalance. When such hormonal fluctuations occur in the body, some of them are produced in too high amounts, which consequently may contribute to acne breakouts. So…Not exactly what you wanted to hear, is it? If you can’t completely eliminate alcohol, at least cut it down. Once in a blue moon, a drink will not hurt you but make sure to drink a river afterwards! Remember, hydration is key. As for smoking, well…you already know what to do…So change your habits, maintain your good looks and get one step closer to a natural glowing skin!Nadine5 Reasons Why Your Skin Wants You To Stay Away From Alcohol And Cigarettes |Picture this scenario: It’s 4:00pm on a Friday afternoon.
